The idea is that there are things that you can do to boost the number of visits to your website that come from search engines. However some of the techniques use sneaky methods that often get blacklisted by the search engine companies. In the long term you would be better to go with a company that can actually market your website/product rather than than a SEO only approach which will only see short term benifits.There are some things like making your site have good readability which would fit into both the category of SEO and marketting.

In a layman’s language; you create a webpage or website highlighting some specific information, upload it on internet visible to all, and it shows up in first couple of pages of search results of any search engine, on searching the relative or targeted information in form of keyword or key phrase, without paying anything to search engines, is Search Engine Optimization.
