I want to get into programming and designing. I am a writer by profession, but am very interested in learning more. I know a slim and I mean slim amount of HTML and nothing else.

I hate programming. Don't have patience. But since I don't have patience with tables also, I will try with CSS.
Otherwise I'm on HTML/BB level.
* Just installed one WYSIWIG editor, it is like old Mozilla composer.

I like PHP. I know only basics of php but there are many free scripts which can be easily modified without strong php knowledge.
Ohh, I forgot Qbasic - I played with it for very long time in 90's on my 386 :)

Since I am still a newbie with regards to this thing and I am still learning the language, I would say it is html. I have always found programming to be an interesting and challenging subject.
to be honest most of all i prefer plain xhtml pages, they are easy to edit, they get indexed better and having dreamweaver under the elbow it is no problem to maintain a site. php has advantages but i prefer to stick to html whenever possible.
