I started a new web site (using yahoo) for a sports site
I published it but it only comes up if you put in the domain name .org
I would like to know how to put it into other search engines where you don't have to put the whole address in.

Well one thing you can do is to add the url of your site manually to the search engines. Most of the search engines have a link to where you can add your site manually. But be warned that it will take them a few months - sometimes even longer - to manually "get" to your site. You can also go to some of the free sites online that will submit your site to a number of search engines at one time.
Now as the other person mentioned - getting your site on the search engines and as high a ranking on the search engines as possible is called search engine optimization which is SEO for short. Basically what that means is that you have to decide what keywords you want associated with your site, check and see where your site ranks and if you don't like your site's rankings (or worse yet your site isn't even IN the search engine results) then you can work on incorporating those search terms into your site.
Here is my example. My blog shows up on page 1 of Google and Yahoo's search engine results for the terms "adsense consultant" and "adsense consulting". Since I am an Adsense Consultant and that is also the name of my blog then these terms are EXACTLY the terms that I want my site to be associated with. Now so far I have managed to get these search engine results simply by working on the content of my blog.
Now there is a "buzz" going around about how a few people have managed to get their sites on the search engines in as little as 4 days! But the info is fairly new so I still have to check out some of the techniques that they are talking about. If its true then this information will help both me and my clients who want higher search engine rankings!

This question really gets internet marketers going, so don't think you're alone in asking this!
The best/cheapest way is to get lots of inward links. DON'T buy them, even if you can afford to, because Google is penalising sites that do this.
First thing you need to do is to decide which keyword you want to aim for, because it's easier to get to the top of the search engines by doing one keyword at a time. So, for example, I have a site about organic gardening which tells people how to grow organic veg and stuff, so I concentrated on "how to grow organic vegetables" as my keyword (although they are called keywords, they are really phrases, because single words aren't very useful).
Write a short link text, and put your "keyword" as the anchor text (the text that people will click on) for example, mine is something like:
<a href="http://www.gardenzone.info"
target="_blank">How to grow organic vegetables</a><br />
Visit the Gardenzone to find out all about growing
organic vegetables, herbs and fruit.
Then you have to find other sites that are related to your site, and write them a nice email asking if they would like to exchange links with you. Put the text for your link into the email, and if the site has a links page with instructions for their link, put it onto your links page before you write and tell them where to find it.
It all takes quite a while, but if you persevere, you will get some backlinks and the ball will start rolling.
The second thing you can do, which actually works even better than the links, is to write articles related to the subject on your website (around 500 words+) and put them into article directories such as http://www.ezinearticles.com/ with a short author box at the bottom in which you put a link to your site, using your keyword as the anchor text.
Other webmasters will publish your article on their site, and the link in your author box will also be published. Articles usually get put on better pages than simple links would, so you get a better chance of the search engines thinking your site is "important" and that will make you move up the page ranking. Also, some people who read your article might click through from there.
These two ideas are part of Search Engine Optimisation, which is a huge subject.
Hope this helps.
