A Linux/windows platform is what the server that gives you the hosting runs on. Sometimes you hear about server crashes? Well Linux doesn't make these happen as often

Linux, definately.

For a start, you can practice setting up a server without having to download free trials, or buy overly priced proprietary software - just click a tickbox by the packagename, and read a few tutorials on configuring it.

Th configuration files for setting things up really does make it quicker - you just need to learn whats what first, but its well worth the time it takes. People get the impression that the software is cheap because it doesnt have a gui for configuring - wrong. If that was the case, why would Apache be by far the most widely used http server? Mysql follows suit too.

Windows is too full of licences and pricing to make it ideal, at least to me. Ive always thought that, hosting companies who use Linux have more money to fund towards more servers, upgrades, training, and so forth.

You dont even need to fork out money for an enterprise class Linux distro - Centos is a free version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux - the difference is, the logos have been changed, and you dont get red hat's support.

If you email them they should tell you what server they are on :)

It doesnt really effect you though.

Does anybody know how to create a simple server for hosting by myself?

Also why is Linux better at hosting than Windows?

Linux is a lot more stable than windows. Plus its free so you can charge less for hosting.

You would need a dedicated sever with WHM (Web Host Manager) :)

i always go for lunix, more secure and a lot cheaper. Windows hosts always cost extra because the admin has to make up for the purchased platform + i heard the windows based servers a lot less stable, many vulnerabilities, etc.
