When choosing Webhosting, one thing to decide is : Windows or Linux server?

You'll need Windows server if you intend to use:
-ASP/ASP.NET
-MS SQL
-MS Access

Linux(Unix):
-Ruby on Rails
-CGI/Perl
-Postgres databases

Any comment? Linux is recomended if you don't need ASP. Does Ruby and Perl run only on Unix servers?

Windows server do support CGI.

I prefer windows servers as i program in ASP / ASP.net. MSSQL databases are even too good as compared to MySQL databases.

I do admit that Linux servers are more reliable thats why i have a dedicated server on Linux. I would'nt suggest anyone to buy a self managed Windows server unless you really know what you are doing !!

Shared accounts are ok on both Windows/Lunux servers.

it really depends on your needs, if you make a site in asp u cant go with unix host anymore as it wont support the language, same about other lanuages so u gotta know in advance hat sort of site u make, say .NET passport, and choose a host in according to it
