How does Google Earth compute elevation?

By activating the "terrain" checkbox on the left, Google Earth shows the elevation (altitude) at the cursor. How does it do it? In fact, what I'm asking is how can I compute the elevation/altitude for a given position (long,lat)? Can I get that value directly from Google Earth (since it's available)?
