This is a silly question- but does moving a file into a different folder change it's location on disk (the same way - I assuming - that disk locations are changed when you run defragment)?

If you are moving a file to a location on the "same" disk then NO it does not change its location (only a special table is updated to inform a heirarchy tree of what files a folder contains is updated)...However if you move a file to a different disk then YES.

no because its the same disk. files are written is spaces called sectors on you hard disk. if you have a big file, it is written in one sector, and if that sector is full, the rest of that file is written in another sector, thus having parts. so parts of files are everywhere on a disk. defragmenting the disk will group these files together so that the file is read faster.
