Windows is for people that want to get production environment imediately and Linux is for people who want to learn how devices are attached to the computer and how computer works. Althou you get Linux that is for production environment out of the box nowadays you will still have to tweak it a little to make it work the way you want. (isn't that the case with Windows also hehe )
I would recommend Slackware or its derivate Zenwalk. Give it a go !

Server: RHE
Desktop: Windows
I'd like to use a couple of applications only available on Windows platform, so I use Windows to run my desktop.

This depends - for desktops and everyday use, windows is definitely better.
Linux is better for administrative use, servers etc.

I agree that for average user Windows is better, but for a user with some experience ... you can just do so much more with linux, not to talk about security which in Linux even unexperienced user cannot break since permission system is so much better.
btw.... hos is permission system done in vista ?

I use Windows since it's most viable for gaming, and hardware compatibility is many times better.

I was using ubuntu as my main OS for months. I installed the Windows Vista beta 2 and haven't bothered to fix the boot records to beable to dual boot again. I've been doing a lot of design and such lately and I prefer to use Photoshop and such in windows. I'm going to set up Photoshop CS2 and all my other design software to run in linux then I'll remove Windows and never look back.

They both have their up's and down's. I still dont believe Linux is 100% desktop ready quite yet. Seeing how fast it is progressing tho it really shouldnt take to long until it is a better desktop OS than Windows.
That said I'm really stoked about Vista and it will be running on my desktop and lappy.
Desktop, go with windows.
For servers and so on, linux. (less chances of something messing up :p)
But linux on a home pc is usseless.

I use Linux as a server, and a desktop operating system.
It is labelled as being for technical users, but from my experience, its just as easy to use for a production environment as it if with Windows. Well, depends mainly what you need it to do, but having no worry of viruses and spyware, the increased security, and the lack of a price tag, Linux wins in my boat.
Vista offers nothing special. It has a much improved desktop theme, but they are WAY behind. Suse already has anything Vista offers with its new desktop gimmicks, and ANY new feature you hear about on Vista's desktop has been on Mac OSX for a number of years now. Vista is so far behind before its even started.
Vista's security initiative, of requiring admin login for installing, or editing system files, has been in Linux/Unix from the VERY start. There is no way im paying over $150 for old news and viruses.
