I have a brandnew HP laptop with Vista. I don't know Vista. It is similar to windows, yet different.
When I tried to load Microsoft Office 97 onto the system, it loaded everything, but could not run "Outlook". I need Microsoft Outlook. What should I do? Is it incompatible? Now that the running system is Windows Vista?

get outlook express. it is free but doesn't have some of the features.
you can also try to work with thunderbird. it is a very nice and simple to work with program.

Windows Vista is very visually similar indeed to XP and other MS operating systems. However, what you are describing does sound like a compatibilty issue.
There is a new version of Office designed with Vista in mind, Office 2007. Alternatively, if that is just a bit too expensive, Office XP (and any releases after that) will likely work fine. Office 97 is just a bit out of date now.
In the meantime, you can use Vista's "Windows Mail" (which comes with Vista) to access e-mail (think of it as Vista's version of Outlook Express).
