When you want to use Google AdWords, how many keywords that match the ads you want are you supposed to use to make sure you get the highest paying ads on your page???
The adwords are placed on a site that I write for - and I get paid when people click them, depending on how much the ad pays, you get the idea... so of course I want to write keyword heavy articles - but how heavy do I have to go? I have heard you should use a keyword 7 times for it to be effective - is this true???

You're not talking of Google Adwords -- where YOU pay to advertise on the Google search engine or network sites (Adsense publishers). You're talking of Google Adsense where you GET PAID to show ads on your site
When you write keyword heavy articles, it's not about stringing together keywords 7-10 times or however many times you want. It's about writing a cohesive article -- and when you write a good article, you won't even think about keyword density. You just want to write about the topic -- e.g. how to improve your credit score; how to market a website; review of Iphone -- and chances are you are going to get the keyword density right
However if your goal is just to put together a bunch of keywords even if the article does not make sense, then you'll be conscious of what you write and if the number is correct.
It's not the number of times -- it's the KEYWORD DENSITY on the page. The keyword should be repeated enough that the search engines will know what the page is all about and Google Adsense will know what ads to serve -- but not too much that the search engines will know you are spamming the system.
Just write. There's no magic formula as to how many times a keyword must be present.
