I understand now :) 'Traditional' is probably a better word. 'Basic' programmers aren't real programmers ;)With the move of application development and services towards the Internet, and web based systems, the line between Web Programming and 'Traditional' Programming that existed pre-2000 has pretty much disappeared today. As an example, I program mainly in Java. Some of my programs are aimed at database records and transactions, form completion systems, just junk that runs on one computer. Java bleeds over into the net, however. JavaScript is a very popular language on the net today. As if that wasn't enough, AJAX is an emerging group of technologies which brings Java into an extremely active role in developing web sites and content.Ruby is another example. A scripting language which you can just do a ton with on a single computer. Add 'Ruby On Rails', a web based package, and you're making web sites with it.I could go on. .NET is a group of technologies which you can do standalone, server, or web-based programming with...PHP is a Web Language, but there's no reason you have to use it for web programming...Anyway, the days when web programming meant knowing HTML and some simple JavaScript are gone. Even knowing XHTML1.1, CSS2, and DHTML won't get you a job as a good web developer for any significant project. If you are looking at a school which has programs that split the focus between web and traditional programming, go with traditional. You will learn a lot more, and can always move towards using what you learn for web development if that is what interests you.Getting started in programming can be difficult.
