thumbs up and thumbs down? So the best rated response would be first? That would save people from scrolling through bad answers for good ones!

I think that is a great idea. Most people don't look at answers that are farther down the page at all (and therefore do not rate them) so it might not make much difference, but who knows it could make a huge difference. I often spend too much time thinking about my answers (silly me) so I am often way down on the page and forgotten *sigh*
EDIT; okay weird but I just noticed this! Look under the question box. It says "Show" and you can change it to show you the answers from highest to lowest rated. So they already do it kinda!

Given the way some people use them in here no, it is often times used to either bolster ones own beliefs or put down those that think differently from you. Someone who is not of your belief can give an excellent answer and it would go to the basement because some decided to thumbs down it.
Personally, I'd be happier with yahoo getting rid of them entirely as I do not use thumbs down and only thumbs up answers when they are good ones, regardless of what the person believes.

I dislike the whole thumbs up/down business. But that is a good idea. Submit it to Yahoo. I would post this on the Yahoo site forum.

Yeah, it sounds like a good idea.
But really, I don't think it would be very practical, especially in a section like this, where the ratings are usually very biased and rarely represent the quality of an answer from an objective standpoint.
