How can I explain what directories do for my websites?

my family that is on the Internet a not lot needs to know what does one get when a person pays for a directory? Can anyone out there please help me? I typically pay for featured links on my websites. Can anyone please help me explain what a person gets when they pay for their website,blog etc in directories?
