how do i find out what graphic cards are compatible with my pc?

Go to your PC's website. If you like a graphic card see the minimum requirements for it.

You need to figure out wether or you have an avaible PCI slot, AGP, or PCI express slot to dedicate to a graphics card, then once you have narrowed that down you can select the upgrade.

That information would be in your owner's manual. It will tell you if you have the old AGP slot or the new PCIe. If you do not have your book - you can download Belarc Advisor for free - it will list in a Browser window all the components of your motherboard. You could to the manufacturers web site as well to find out the specs of your particular model.Keep in mind that the bigger the graphics card - the more power it is going to take to run - so we are looking at the limitations of your power supply as well.
