Windows XP!!!!?

i need help our XP will only boot itself and everytime it does it says "error" and then starts over again. What does that mean? our computer does not have a warrany if you were wondering. It says something about lost files but im confused!!!HELP!!!

it has an "error" press f8 while it boots up and select safe mode from the list then let it do a scan disk
