I'd say the best linux is probably red hat, but many find it harder to use, and find debian (http://www.debian.org/) a much more 'easy-going' option, which it just as good...

Aye, for a newb, Ubuntu is the way to go. The graphical installer/LiveCD combo owns, and it's very fast and stable.

Suse would be my choice.

It is by far the easiest to setup (after the installation, which isnt as simple as ubuntu - just longer). I can have a LAMP server, multimedia, browser plugins, etc all setup within half hour after installation. It has the browser plugins as installable rpm's in its repository by default. It has the full version of Java, and not some re-written, in-compatible version. It has intuitive desktop features, and seems to be before all other distros for new technoligy, such as Xen and xgl.

Novell, the company behind Suse are also making an enterprise desktop solution, which is fast being noticed by governments and businesses of all sizes, across the world. Suse is set to be the distro that leads the storm onto the end-users desktop.

Red Hatb - top popular
DEbian - Top used in my place
Ubuntu - you can try it from a CD without changing anything on your PC.
And if you install it, you are still able to run both Linux and Windows on one PC.

There are some national translations of Linux...

All Linux distributions list (http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html). Click Go and wait 10 seconds. You'll get over 300 results.

Argh! So much pseudofact in this thread.

Chuckun, you know who I am; fancy seeing you here.

Why do you like Red Hat? It is no better than Fedora, except for some commercial packages, and you have to pay for it.

And debian is harder to install than Red Hat

They control the login client and application launcher, system security is down to Fortres (fgc.exe) and Windows itself.

I currently use OpenSUSE 10.2 and it is far more secure than Ubuntu and most Red Hat installs.

Ubuntu or SUSE are the best in my book.
