Is Your Computer Slow?
I recently realised my PC was dreadfully slow compared to a few months ago..
So, I decided I needed to speed my PC up. The steps I took worked a treat, so I guess I'll make sure everyone can optimise their PC for speedy performance.
1. Scan your computer for viruses. The best ones tend to be the most expensive, but in my opinion, Norton Antivirus is a waste of money. While it does the job very well, it costs over double the price of most good antivirus software, and its much slower too! I recommend McAfee and maybe some free ones can be quite good too such as AVG(free and premium) and Avast(free and premium).
I hope you have virus protection.. You should have... it's not really too expensive for most, and it protects you from unwanted viruses! You should also get a firewall - most firewalls do the job just fine, but just incase, Norton firewall, McAfee firewall, ZoneAlarm - the usual.
2. Scan your computer for spyware with anti-spyware programs like Spybot Search and Destroy, and AdAware... They are both free.
3. Then, run a Disk Cleanup. Dont know how? Its easy. You can either select it via Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup, or right click "C:" (or whatever local drives you have) and go to properties, and click "Disk Cleanup". When resuults of what you can free up are displayed, I select them all, but I choose not to compress old files, because this has caused me problems in the past (compression).
4. Run Disk Defragmenter - To do this, go to Start > All programs > Accessories > Disk Defragmenter. Just Analyze and then Defragment. THIS CAN TAKE SOME TIME!!!!
5. You can also use CCleaner to remove unused and temporary files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster, more efficiently and giving you more hard disk space. Norton System Works comes with tonnes of really handy tools for this!
6. You should reboot your computer after all this is done for the effects to actually take effect.. If a virus scanner or anything requires a restart, do it then too, but not when any processes are running!
You should do this about once a month (virus / spyware / adware checks every week!) to ensure your pc is at its best!
Hope this helps someone :D
