I currrently use "The Gimp" for images which I then covert to HTML code and export into my site. It is OK but the images are not crystal clear.
Can anyone recommend any software (preferably free) that I can use to create images and then export into my site???

they are not clear because gimp is a bitmap editor, and is designed for editing photos, etc, not websites. try inkscape, which is a vector editor. it will be crystal sharp but it's native format (svg) is not fully supported by most browsers (although firefox 3 supports most of it) you need to go file => export bitmap and it will make a png file which you can upload to your site.
http://www.inkscape.org

also jpeg is, again, designed for photos and it isn't as good with design elements like you would use in a website. pngs are best when accuracy is necessary because they are lossless, gifs are good when there are large parts of a single color because they compress well, and jpegs are best for photos. if you use jpegs for design elements you might get compression artifacts.
